Red's childhood friend and closest confidant. he was born into a large family and his sisters all left the islands as soon as they became of age. Buan followed their footsteps and took up thaumaturgy in Ul'dah 2 years before Red arrived in Gridania. after ARR he decided to stop participating in scion activities and instead worked to become an informant like his sisters.

Buan did not start out as friends with the twins. as a kid, he used to always tease Red about her size and escape Ras' wrath afterwards. it all changed when he got stuck on a tree and the only kid large enough to help him down was Red. the three kind of sort of became best friends after that (especially when Red found out that he has a massive crush on her brother. she never stopped teasing Buan for that fact).
he never officially joined the scions but still accompanied Red on most of her adventures, up until the bloody banquet (he was invited but didn't attend), after which he stayed out of sight to avoid the crystal braves. Bachu and Arau were kind enough to let him stay with them. he ran into Ras in a Limsa port and the two worked together while waiting for Red to return. their reunion wasn't until the end of the Dragonsong war, where he finds that Red has become a very different person from when he last saw her.
Buan continued to support her wherever he can, and now that Ras is with them it seemed that everything would be fine. that sentiment is short-lived as they are thrust into another war (or two), and he finally sees how Red is affected by all the constant fighting and deaths around her. it is around this time that Buan finally had the chance to bed Ras, after all those years crushing on him. unfortunately it's fruitless because the other person does not feel the same way.
after getting pulled into the First, he satyed at the Crystarium and worked as guard, waiting for the twins to arrive. however, Red's arrival was only the start of a nightmare for the both of them. many truths were revealed and in his grief, Buan blamed it all onto his childhood friend. this created a rift in their years-long friendship and they were not on speaking terms even after his return to the Source.
he did not follow when the scions left for Sharlayan. Buan regrets whatever hurtful things he said to Red but was too ashamed to talk to her, so their relationship was left unmended.
Buan was originally a catboi for the memes, i made a wholeass semi-lore compliant backstory for him, put him in compromising positions, even gave him trauma! then EW announced bunbois, he remained a catte... but not for long, because i wanted to make a "breeding like rabbits" joke about his parents. male vieras are also gnc as fuck so now you can't tell if Buan's siblings (or parents!) are guys or gals. or neither. ah, the beauty of viera...
